Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need a firm mattress for my back?

Probably, but not always.  The larger a person is the more support and firmness he needs.  Support is good, however if a mattress causes your hips and shoulders to hurt you should buy something else.

  2. Springs verses Foam, what should I buy?

We are partial to springs, however the springs in most beds we do not like. The most common springs today in beds costing less than $1,000 are verticoils, continuous coils, and most recently promotional pocket coils. These spring units have many coils in them, but the springs have very little turn, they are vertical and are not barrel shaped the way they use to be. Never mind the gauge of the wire, these spring units are light weight and hard. A hard spring unit is going to create Pressure Points. We still use the traditional bonnel units and high coil count off set spring units in most of our beds. These are twice tempered, five turn units, barrel shaped springs, which are heavier and softer than what is mostly available on the market these days. A good spring unit is the last thing to go bad in a bed.

  3. How long should a new mattress last?

Five to seven years. People sleep on mattresses much longer than this to their detriment. A worn out mattress will diminish the amount of sleep one gets each night, plus one’s body/back will want to hurt more.

  4. If I buy a mattress from you will it sag?

The cushioning layers in our beds will settle a little bit, but you will not see the big holes that some cheap mattresses develop. The biggest thing causing “sink holes” in relatively new mattresses is they cheap cushioning layer used between the top layers and the spring. (Big companies do this to make their beds look good at a great price when they are new.) Meridian Mattress Factory does not use cheap filler layers in anything.

  5. What if I don’t like my new mattress?

We try hard to be very consistent with every mattress we build. However, if your mattress is too hard or soft, we will rework it and make right.

  6. Do you deliver?

  9. Can you make a sleep set that is not so tall?

Yes. We can make a shorter mattress and a shorter box spring. Our short box spring is only 5” tall! We also have low boy frames and drop rails. (A standard rail goes strait across. A drop rail drops down 3 ½” then goes across.)

  10. My bed squeaks. Is it my mattress?

If a bed squeaks, the sound is almost always coming from the box spring but in rare cases, it could be the bed itself. Most box springs today are built out of wood with cardboard on top. If the attachment of the cardboard to the wood becomes compromised, or loosened in any way, it will squeak when rubbed together. If a bed is not tight or not firmly placed on the floor it will squeak. Mattresses can make cracking or popping noises. If a mattress is glued together it may make a cracking sound when it is new. If a mattress makes a popping noise, the springs may be rubbing against each other. This is primarily caused by the helical wire, the wire that ties the springs together, being too big in diameter. This is a very big problem in foreign made spring units. (They like to use a larger diameter wire so they can tie the springs together more quickly.) At Meridian Mattress Factory, we do everything we can to prevent creaking, squeaking or popping when we craft your custom bed set, so you can rest easy and rest quietly!
