ALL beds get gradually softer over time so buy a bed that is on the firmer side of your comfort level.

However, People that buy soft beds that do not suit them have a great tendency to over compensate toward firmness when they buy their second bed.  If sharing a bed both people have to be comfortable on it.  Both need to be involved in the buying decision.

First, most beds wear out from the outside in.  The cover and what the cover is quilted too stretches and looses its shape.  This makes beds softer.  When the cover stretches enough it becomes lumpy.  (All covers stretch.  The thicker the quilting is, and the softer and lighter weight the cover is the more the stretch.) Choose a mattress that has a snug, high quality cover.

Secondly, the cushioning layers should be of the highest quality that one can afford.  It is better to have high quality foam or cushioning layers on a one sided mattress than a two sided mattress (one that can be flipped over) with promotional foam layers.  We make high quality two sided mattresses and everything being equal they will last twice as long as a one sided bed because the cushioning layers wear out before the spring unit. Two sided beds are not as soft as one sided beds because the foam layers are not as thick.  For this reason many people will prefer one sided beds.  Our best one sided mattresses are topped with 2” Latex toppers.  Latex delivers much more comfort and durability than foam. Memory foam makes for a more comfortable bed.  However, do not expect Memory foam to add to the life or longevity of a mattress.

Finally, the Spring Unit should be heavy and good enough for use in a hospitality setting or motel.  With the exception of promotional twin mattresses, all of the springs in our beds meet this criteria.  ALL of the springs we use are made by reputable, domestic companies.
