If you have a custom made or antique bed, perhaps you’d like to have a new mattress custom made as well. The following may seem like a lot of measuring but we need these measurements, because on an antique bed the box spring and the mattress we make are almost never the same size. We want to optimize what you have (make it near perfect).
- Measure how far the box spring will be off the floor. (measure from the floor to the bottom of the box spring) Then establish how high you want your bed to finish off the floor. ( 28”, 30”, 34” etc)
- Measure how Long the inside of the bed is. If you have post, measure the length inside the post and outside the post. If you have blocks of wood in the corner, which most beds do, measure the length of the bed inside these blocks. It will probably be less than 68”, which is ok.
- Measure how Wide the bed is at the head and again measure the width at the foot. We need the width inside the blocks in the corner and outside the blocks in the corner.
- We need the height of the side rails above your wooden slats. It should be in the 4” to 6” range. We also need to know how tall the blocks are in the corners. Do the side rails curve up in the corners? If so how long and tall is the curve?
- Do you have adequate center support in your antique bed. We have rails that fit inside a bed that can be adjusted to work. If your rails hook into your head and foot maybe you need a new set of side rails. We also have a welding shop down the street.
- If you have doubt make pictures of the bed. Especially make pictures of the parts that there may be a question about. Take pictures of the tape measure at each point that you are measuring then email the pictures to us.
The least expensive way to make a mattress for an antique bed is to make a foam mattress. If need be the corners can be cut out. However If someone, perhaps yourself will be sleeping in this bed most of the time, then we need the measurements to see what your options could be.
